Minimize laundry loads. Doing a load here and there works best for most people. When laundry builds up to giant mountain levels, it can feel overwhelming to tackle. Using smaller baskets can be a helpful reminder to take the laundry in and start a load. If doing frequent loads of laundry doesn’t work for you, a good alternative is to invest in a large three-bin laundry sorter that can keep things tidy until you have a chance to get to it.

One popular trend is to install a laundry center into a large bathroom or walk-in closet that is part of a master bedroom suite. Families with bedrooms upstairs may choose to have their laundry in a second-floor hallway for greater convenience in putting away clean clothes. New, quieter washers and dryers make running the machines at night less disruptive, although you still don’t want them sharing a bedroom wall. If you do plan to install a washing machine on an upper floor of your house, it’s important to check local building codes. You’ll want to install a washing machine over a shower base with a floor drain or a pan that will funnel water to plumbing waste lines. No matter what floor your washing machine is on, make sure it is hooked up to an automatic shutoff valve. You also need to make sure there is enough space around your dryer to dissipate heat.

In a Bathroom – For this family home in Virginia, Stubb was tasked with finding space for a laundry room where there wasn’t any space before. The family had already added a second floor to their one-story home and didn’t have the budget to add a laundry room to the reconfigured space downstairs, where they really wanted the laundry to be located.

Three nice-size bedrooms, two bathrooms and a laundry room are located on the third floor. Having the laundry room upstairs by the bedrooms and bathrooms avoids anyone’s having to carry loads of clothes up and down three flights of stairs. And to keep the plan efficient, the laundry room is an extension of the hall bath.

If your bedrooms are upstairs but you want your laundry room downstairs, you can incorporate a laundry chute into your design, eliminating the need to lug heavy baskets up and down stairs. Some homes have a laundry area on each floor, for the ultimate in convenience.

When I’m thinking about laundry room design I use the same type of thinking as I do for kitchen design. Like the kitchen, the laundry is a highly functioning space (I guess that’s why it’s often called a utility room in England). Of course we want it to look good (even beautiful) but if you can’t do the activities that make up ‘doing the laundry’ smoothly and easily, the room will be a misery (a futility room – that’s what my brother in law used to call it as a toddler!).

I once had a laundry room which doubled as the back entry to the house, which naturally was the door that the family used most of the time. The laundry had to compete with coats, shoes (often dirty) and sports equipment. I lost count of the number of time I found a pair of gardening gloves on top of a clean pile of laundry!

Having in-unit laundry machines is a luxury right up there with having a dishwasher, a flood of natural light and perhaps parking. When you get a stain, have guests over or just plain need something clean to wear, there’s nothing better than being able to do a quick load without having to schelp all your stuff to the laundromat. If you have a little space that you can give up in your bathroom or closet, you might be able to gain a whole laundry area.

If your laundry and bathroom are in the same room, then building your washing machine and dryer in underneath the vanity bench is a good way to keep the space neat and organised. Your vanity basin can double as a laundry tub, too. Look for a ceramic basin that is deep enough to hand-wash clothes, or to fill a mop bucket easily, but still looks stylish.

A laundry room off a kitchen can become a family hub, including a computer corner for studying or a center for family messages and paying bills. If you have the space, a table in the center of the room can serve as a spot for crafts, gift wrapping or folding laundry. Corner shelves, cabinets and sinks can make smart use of spaces that might otherwise be wasted. An ironing board can be tucked inside a cabinet or hidden behind a false drawer front. Pull-out bins can hold dirty clothes, powder detergent and clothes that need to be taken to the dry cleaner. If you wash pets, or have family members coming in muddy from sports practice, a shower stall can make life easier (and a hanging rod in the shower makes drip-drying clothes a breeze).

Find Existing Plumbing: Your best option for a low-cost laundry retrofit, is to install the machines on the same wall as existing plumbing stacks. This might mean adjacent to, or on the backside of, your bathroom or mechanical room wall. Existing plumbing means both water supply and waste lines are easily accessible, without these plumbing could be the most expensive component of your project.

Combined (All In One): Popular overseas, combination units are becoming more common in the US as technology improves. A combination machine works as both a washer and dryer in a single unit. Because of this, the laundry cycle takes longer, but the payoff is in the small footprint and lack of need for an exterior air vent. These units are sized to conveniently fit under counter or inside a closet. If you don’t like seeing exposed appliances, consider concealing the machine behind a door that matches your bathroom cabinets.

Under Counter: If you currently have a large vanity, all you need to do give up a little cabinet space and possibly that extra sink, to make room for laundry. You could either install the combo unit under counter, or shorten the vanity space altogether and install the stacked unit option.

Closet: If you have a linen or hall closet to spare, these make really great laundry location options. You’ll want to make sure the closet is large enough to have at least a 2’6″ wide door to easily access and fully open the machine doors. The closet should be at least 2-6″-2’9″ deep, but ideally closer to 3’0″ deep to fit full sized units.

Very often the main laundry activities (washing, drying, ironing, sorting) take place in various different locations within the home – even if you have a dedicated room. Washing, or course, takes place where the machines are. Drying might be on a clothes horse in the spare room with ironing in front of the TV in the living room and sorting on the kitchen table.

“The bathroom was an avocado suite,” Andrew says, “and everything was in the wrong place.” The skylight is the only original feature – everything else is new. “It’s quite unusual to have a massive roof light in a historic building,” says Andrew, so the owners were naturally quite eager to take maximum advantage of the light flooding the room.
